Children's gastroenterology patient information
Find out what to expect when you come to hospital for your child's gastroenterology appointment.
Before your appointment
We usually see patients within two months of referral.
We ask that parents/caregivers attend all appointments with their child if they are under the age of 16.
There is no preparation is needed. Please bring with you a list of medications, your child’s ‘red book’ and a list of questions to ask the doctor.
During your appointment
You may wait up to one hour for your appointment and the appointment can take up to 45 minutes, please plan to spend almost two hours with us.
Please note that we are a teaching hospital, so medical students may be present for some appointments. If you do not wish to have them in the room please let the nurse or doctor know and the students will be asked to step outside.
During the appointment we will take a history from your child and family, an examination of your child’s height and weight and discuss our diagnosis and treatment options.
Occasionally a blood test may be needed, or you may have a discussion with one of our dietitians.
After your appointment
A letter will be sent to your GP with a report of the consultation – a copy of this letter will be sent to you and any outstanding results will be sent or telephoned through rapidly.
Follow-up appointments will be arranged either at St Mary's Hospital or Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
