Trust surgeon in Time100 health list

Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham has been named in TIME magazine's prestigious annual list of the 100 most influential people in health, which recognises those 'advancing care, shaping policy, driving innovation, and transforming lives'.

Congratulations to Lord Darzi, who is an honorary consultant surgeon at Imperial College Healthcare, as well as director of the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College London and executive chair of the Fleming Initiative.

Lord Darzi is included in the 'catalysts' section of the list, in recognition of the significance and impact of his independent review of the NHS, which was commissioned by health and social care secretary Wes Streeting and published last year. The review analysed the NHS' problems and their causes, including sustained underinvestment in funding for running costs and infrastructure, and 'themes for repair'. It concluded that 'the NHS is in critical condition but its vital signs are strong'.

Following the review, the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England launched a national consultation to develop a 10-Year Health Plan to set the NHS on a path for the future. We have submitted an organisational response to the consultation, drawn from the views and experiences of our staff and partners.

In their profile of Lord Darzi, TIME said: "His insights are now being used to push for reform, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer promising a 10 year plan to reimagine the NHS, focusing on digitizing the organization and committing more investment to preventative care and community health services.”

To assemble this list, TIME reporters and editors spent months consulting sources and experts around the world to select the most influential in the world of health. The result is the TIME100 Health, ‘a community of leaders from across industries - scientists, doctors, advocates, educators, and policy makers, among others - changing the health of the world.’

Professor Tim Orchard, chief executive of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, said: "It's wonderful to see Lord Darzi's hugely influential and important work being recognised in this prestigious global list. Many congratulations!”
