A consortium of innovation clusters from across London have welcomed the new London Growth Plan from the Greater London Authority, launched by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan today.

The innovation clusters are:

  • Paddington Life Sciences
  • Barts Life Sciences, Whitechapel
  • Canary Wharf Life Sciences and Healthcare
  • The Knowledge Quarter
  • The London Cancer Hub, Sutton
  • Olympic Park Innovation District
  • White City Innovation District

The clusters welcome the placing of London’s life sciences at the forefront of the plan for London’s economic growth – and are already working collaboratively to meet many of the goals laid out in the new Growth Plan.

The clusters are looking forward to working with the Mayor's Office and other stakeholders to deliver the actions set out in the plan.

Dr Suki Balendra, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Paddington Life Sciences, said:

“Paddington Life Sciences is a growing life sciences hub in London, located around St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington and part of the Imperial West Tech Corridor. We welcome the recognition that the life sciences sector is a key part of the strategy for investment and growth in London’s economy. In Paddington, we have an exceptional opportunity to make a significant contribution to economic growth through the expansion of Paddington Life Sciences at the same time as redeveloping St Mary’s Hospital.”

Jodie Eastwood, CEO of London’s Knowledge Quarter, said:

“The Knowledge Quarter is at the heart of London’s growing innovation economy and home to significant international breakthroughs in the life sciences, from world-class dementia and cancer research to advancements in AI-led drug discovery. The London Growth Plan will ensure that London’s innovation clusters remain global leaders in research, culture, and enterprise, securing the city’s future as a world-class knowledge hub.”

Councillor Barry Lewis, Leader of Sutton Council, a leading partner at The London Cancer Hub, said:

“Our vision for Sutton is to become the global centre for oncology in London. The life science sector will be pivotal to the future growth of the capital over the coming years and I am delighted that the Mayor’s growth plan names the London Cancer Hub in Sutton as the key engine for this growth.

“The London Cancer Hub is already delivering life changing cancer drug discoveries alongside world-leading cancer care through the Institute of Cancer Research (a member institution of the University of London) and the Royal Marsden NHS Trust. A multi-million investment from Aviva working with developer Socius will further expand the district and will bring more commercial and community spaces.”

Professor Geraint Rees, Vice-Provost (Research, Innovation & Global Engagement) at UCL, a partner at the Knowledge Quarter and the Olympic Park Innovation District, said:

“UCL is committed to innovation excellence that translates our research discoveries into impacts, benefitting citizens in London and throughout the UK. It is welcome that the London Growth Plan recognises the exceptional strengths of London in life sciences and its leadership in global innovation. We look forward to continuing our active role in the collaborative effort to drive economic growth and regeneration in the Knowledge Quarter and East Bank."
