Background
Sotirios is a consultant gynaecologist and accredited subspecialist in reproductive medicine and surgery at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He is based at the historic IVF unit of Hammersmith Hospital, which is responsible for the first IVF baby in London and the first embryo biopsy in the world. He is also based at St Mary’s Hospital, running a weekly reproductive endocrinology clinic, which receives national referrals for conditions such as premature ovarian insufficiency, functional hypothalamic amenorrhoea and polycystic ovarian syndrome. He holds an honorary clinical lectureship at Imperial College London.
He graduated from the University of Sheffield and continued his specialty training in London. He subsequently relocated to Hong Kong where he was appointed a visiting scholar by the Chinese University of Hong Kong and was awarded a substantial research grant by the Hong Kong government to complete a fellowship in IVF and a doctoral thesis on “3D ultrasound in reproductive medicine and surgery”.
He later completed a surgical fellowship at Fuxing Hospital/Capital Medical University Beijing, one of the leading reproductive endoscopy centres in China, before returning to Imperial College to complete his subspecialty across Hammersmith, Queen Charlotte's & Chelsea and St Mary's hospitals.
Sotirios has gained extensive experience from working in several different public and private IVF units (within the UK, Europe and Hong Kong). He has co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters in the field of fertility and IVF. He has co-developed national and international guidelines on topics such as recurrent miscarriage and congenital uterine anomalies for the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RCOG) and the European Society of Human Reproduction & Embryology (ESHRE) which are used widely by clinicians across the world. He is frequently invited to lecture at national and international conferences and between 2013-2015 was one of the youngest ever members of ESHRE to be appointed deputy of the reproductive surgery special interest group.
Due to his background, Sotirios has a particular expertise in technically challenging IVF treatment and regularly receives referrals for complex cases such as MRKH syndrome, where egg retrieval may be challenging. He also frequently collaborates with the industry, having extensive experience in femtech and the application of novel technologies in reproductive medicine. More recently, he has completed an executive programme on artificial intelligence in healthcare from MIT.
