Background
Miss Ourania Frangouli is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon with a subspecialty interest in glaucoma, paediatric ophthalmology and cataracts. She is also part of the team for community and general and emergency ophthalmology.
She is currently training programme director for ophthalmology in north Thames. She has held the posts of unit training lead and college tutor for ophthalmology at Imperial College NHS Trust and at Barking, Havering and Redbridge (BHR) University Hospitals NHS Trust.
She completed her basic and higher ophthalmology training in the London deanery based at Moorfields Eye Hospital and was awarded a UK certificate of completion of training in 2011. She completed two clinical and surgical fellowships in Moorfields Eye Hospital in adult and paediatric glaucoma and in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus.
She holds the title of Member and Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (MRCOphth and FRCOphth) and is included on the specialist register for ophthalmology of the General Medical Council. She holds a PhD from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki School of Medicine following her thesis on the ‘Investigation of anterior chamber angle in keratoconus’.
Before joining Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, she worked as a consultant in clinical posts in glaucoma and medical education at Moorfields Eye Hospital and in glaucoma and paediatric ophthalmology at BHR University Hospitals NHS Trust. She is a dedicated educator in ophthalmology and ophthalmic surgery trainer. In her posts she led service and training improvements as clinical lead for glaucoma as well as college tutor, unit training lead for postgraduate ophthalmology, deputy lead for undergraduate medical education and now as training programme director for ophthalmology in north Thames.
She is a senior examiner on the European Board of Ophthalmology. She displays various clinical and research interests and has presented the findings on numerous national and international scientific meetings. She enjoys charitable work related to medicine and ophthalmology in the UK and abroad.
