Background
Niten is a double fellowship-trained consultant ophthalmic surgeon, with subspeciality expertise in bespoke cataract surgery, glaucoma diagnosis and management, laser treatment and glaucoma surgery. His NHS practice runs from the Western Eye Hospital in Marylebone, London.
He undertook his undergraduate medical degree at Oxford University, obtaining an additional Masters degree in physiology and winning several prizes during his studies. He initially trained in internal medicine, gaining membership of the Royal College of Physicians, before winning a place on the prestigious North Thames (Moorfields) 7-year ophthalmology rotation. After becoming a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 2017, Niten decided to pursue glaucoma and cataract as his subspecialty interest and completed fellowships at Moorfields and then the Western Eye Hospital. This training, with some of the world’s leading glaucoma and cataract experts, underpins his approach to the complex/tertiary level patients he sees in his current practice. He also has extensive emergency/general ophthalmology experience and works as a consultant in the Western Eye A&E department.
Niten is committed to the education and training of the next generation of eye care specialists – he supervises medical students, BSc students, trainee surgeons and optometrists and has lectured on the UCL Ophthalmology MSc. He was twice awarded Teacher of the Month for Oxford University Medical School and worked with the General Medical Council for nearly 20 years, reviewing medical schools across the UK. He advocates and advises on patient safety, having served as the Quality and Safety lead for ophthalmology at Imperial.
