Background

Mr Lalin Navaratne is a consultant general, upper GI and trauma surgeon currently serving in both military and NHS settings. His NHS practice is based at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He is a member of the regular British Armed Forces (Defence Medical Services) holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Mr Navaratne graduated 1st in his class (with distinction) from University College London (UCL) Medical School. Whilst at medical school he undertook an intercalated Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Anatomy, once again graduating top of his class, receiving a First Class honours degree and named on the Dean’s list. Mr Navaratne completed his postgraduate surgical training in London at various prestigious surgical units including Royal London Hospital (Barts Health NHS Trust), Royal Marsden Hospital and St Mary’s Hospital (Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust). Mr Navaratne completed a Major Trauma fellowship at the Level 1 Major Trauma Centre at St Mary’s Hospital. He subsequently undertook travelling fellowships to Kingston, Jamaica for the management of complex abdominal injuries with a focus on gunshot trauma and the David Dunn Fellowship to Hospital San Carlos in Madrid for Upper GI Surgery. Mr Navaratne is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.

Mr Navaratne is an expert in the laparoscopic management of gallstones and its associated complications such as gallstone related pain (biliary colic), gallbladder infection/inflammation (acute cholecystitis), gallstones that have escaped into the common bile duct (common bile duct stones / choledocholithiasis), obstructive jaundice and gallstone pancreatitis. Mr Navaratne performs elective and emergency cholecystectomy (key-hole surgery for gallbladder removal) with or without intra-operative cholangiogram (to ensure the bile duct is clear of stones) and laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (key-hole surgery to remove stones from the bile duct). Mr Navaratne also has a special interest in the management of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and minimally invasive abdominal wall hernia repair (including inguinal, femoral, umbilical, paraumbilical, epigastric, incisional and ventral wall hernias). His expertise spans complex general surgery, upper gastrointestinal procedures, and trauma surgery, underscored by his extensive military and civilian medical experience.

Mr Navaratne has published over 50 peer review papers in high impact medical journals. He has written several book chapters and is the author of the only textbook dedicated to Laparoscopic Common Bile Duct Exploration (LCBDE). He has presented his work at numerous international meetings and has received several awards/prizes for his research including the David Dunn Medal from the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ALSGBI).
