We urgently need a new hospital – find out more about our redevelopment programme and how you can help us to create a better St Mary’s
We ran an engagement programme with patients and local communities through January to get early input to our plans for the redevelopment of St Mary’s Hospital, part of the Government’s New Hospital Programme. Just under 300 people completed our survey – and many more attended one of our local ‘pop-up’ events or online session - with almost all expressing support for a full rebuild.
Feedback from our most recent phase of public engagement on our plans for redevelopment is available in a dedicated summary pack.
We are now awaiting a decision on funding to enable us to move on to detailed design and planning, which will include developing a fully comprehensive involvement and co-design process. For our Charing Cross and Hammersmith refurbishment and rebuild schemes – also part of the New Hospital Programme – we remain on track to submit first-stage business cases within the next few weeks.
Meanwhile, we are beginning to deliver an estates and infrastructure investment plan for the short to medium term. We are looking to focus our relatively limited, annual capital funding on initiatives that support improved ways of working as well as tackling the most urgent backlog maintenance. We are also seeking to identify and leverage other suitable sources of funding, such as charitable donations.
In the past few weeks, we have seen progress on a range of schemes:
- An additional £313,000 to deliver a second phase of improvements to 3 West Ward at Charing Cross, including more consultation and waiting rooms - due to be completed late autumn.
- £865,000 to improve clinical facilities and patient access in the Irvine vascular studies department at St Mary’s – due to be completed by the end of April 2025
- We're developing plans to create a new library, staff resource and community engagement space in a fully refurbished education centre within the Mint Wing at St Mary’s, replacing the existing library in the medical school building – due to be completed this autumn.
- We are securing funding to completely refurbish and upgrade the main café and its kitchen facilities at St Mary’s and to create a 24/7 staff lounge – due to open in June 2024. We're also modernising the public seating area and upgrading the kitchen to offer a broader selection of food to everyone.
- Funding to replace a CT scanner for radiotherapy at Charing Cross Hospital
